Making heritage seedlings available for the local community to grow, eat and enjoy.
About
The Eastern Field
The Eastern Field is a heritage seed saving garden and plant nursery with a mission to promote and support food security and seed sovereignty, by growing and preserving heritage seeds through the use of ethical, sustainable and regenerative practices. These seeds will be grown into high-quality, nutrient-dense seedlings, which will nurture and nourish a prosperous, empowered, and resilient community.
Mission
What we do
Here at The Eastern Field, we are proudly one of the very few commercial seed savers in New Zealand. We raise, nurture, and save a wide variety of heritage vegetable, flower, and herb seeds, and grow them on into happy and healthy seedlings for the home gardeners of Rotorua to reap the rewards. Along with the products, we also tell the story of the seeds, and the importance of carrying on their linage, through education and resources.
Values
Quality
Our seedlings are grown by using only organic, environmentally friendly, and NZ sourced products, that provide you with quality assured, healthy, and nutritious plants for your garden.
Community
Our top priority is supporting, promoting, and improving the health and well-being of the community, by offering superior products and educational resources that aim to connect people to their land and food sources.
Integrity
We live and work by the virtues of integrity, by consistently adhering to the moral and ethical principles of honesty, fairness, equality, compassion, respect, and responsibility for the people and the environment.
Reliability
Rest assured, that you can depend on us for a reliable and trustworthy source of in-season vegetable, flower, and herb seeds and seedlings, for a year-round supply of nourishment and abundance from your backyard.
We are whole-heartedly committed to honouring the seeds by continuing and strengthening their lineage; the land by giving back more than what we receive, and the people by re-connecting them back to ancestral nourishment.
Our commitment
Founder story
From truly humble beginnings, The Eastern Field was founded by Jemma Joy in August 2022.
Jemma spent many years travelling around the country seeking mentorship from the gardening experts of New Zealand. While on this journey, she gathered an abundance of wisdom and hands-on experience on how to effectively create and maintain a reciprocal relationship with the land by using organic, sustainable, and regenerative agricultural practices.
With this invaluable knowledge and a passion for cultivation, Jemma has devoted her time to growing, enhancing, and preserving NZ heritage seeds, as well as offering educational services and encouragement toward the reclamation of health, food security, and seed sovereignty.
Thanks to the incredible amount of support from the community, The Eastern Field has flourished and is successfully supplying the home gardeners of Rotorua with a reliable source of heritage seedlings.
